129: b-day presence

Please bare with me awhile….this is my birthday present to me mostly from myself and Scott made the final payment.  He is a Soul Doll, Killian.  He came from Korea and is too a BJD.  He is approx 62 centimeters (about 2 feet).  He came with an awful wig so I made him a new one till I can figure out what one I want to buy for him.  He came with the face painting–I think he is very wonderful.  I made his out fit for him and like sewing for this size of doll very much.  He goes well with my Elf Doll Tifa.

I found out that jersey knit is really easy to sew with and will be making more out of this fabric.

His pants are made out of a skirt that I bought at Pacific beach (the Wacky Warehouse).  The skirt was UGLY but the material was different and when I cut it open there was lots of it.  Scott likes how it looks in his pants.  I used a free on-line pant pattern and think they turned out quit well.  I bought his shoes–they have skulls on them too LOL.  I find myself looking at how young men dress to get ideas on how to costume him.

My friend gave these to Mimi and I for our birthdays.  The green one is mine and, I am not sure what it looks like on your monitor, but the other one is bright pink!!!!  She bought them from a lady at her church who makes and sells these.  They are made out of used “items”….pillows, sheets, towels etc.  I think they are charming and I may not take mine of the hanger ;0)

I have been slow in the art area here.  I am almost done with an article that I have been requested to write for Doll Crafter and Costuming.  That magazine has a new editor and after what happened with Art Doll Quarterly, I am a bit gun shy as to if they will keep the article or not.  I did get paid for the last one I did (the sculpting one) and it was fun to get that check!!!  Noel will be starting running start on the 21st of Sept and Max and Mimi start taking classes (2 days a week) on the 28th (the other 3 days I homeschool them).  We had to buy books for Noel’s classes (YUCK!!!). I am in the process of figuring out his bus schedule.  And there are a misc fees that have to be paid for before he starts.  Along with the fact that Scott was in a car accident (he has minor whiplash but the van was pretty smashed up) and I am waiting for it to get fixed.  I think all this is taking energy from me mentally and I am finding that I am having a hard time getting into a creative spot.  I think that is why I am enjoying my BJD’s right now.  They are a “canvas” that I can create upon versus when I make my dolls it is from the bottom up (or rather inside out LOL).  I know my muse will visit me sometime soon but right now I am going to enjoy “playing” with my toys.  Will you still be here when my must shows up again?

125:Doll Crafter and Costuming Oct 2009

I received my complimentary copies yesterday.  I always get a little queasy when I see myself or my stuff in print.  Guess I am afraid it will make me look goofy.  The article is 3 full pages long and has lots of big close up pictures.  It had been edited a lot  but did keep the “flavor/intent” of what I was trying to get across.  Originally the idea (sculpting doll heads on Halloween skulls) has been accepted by Art Doll Quarterly–they changed editors and the new editor rejected it.  I had been wanting to get into other publications so sent the idea to Doll Crafter and Costuming..that editor gave it the green light.  Happy ending after all.  The publishing world works in their own mysterious way and it is different from magazine to magazine (we-Scott and I–have been learning this over the course of the last year–see his blog for the magazines/books he has been-or will be-in.)

The trip to the beach for our birthdays was fun.  While the weather at home was 100 degrees plus, the temp at the beach was in the low 70′s.  Kids played and played on the beach–they found out that you can get sand in the most unusual places LOL.  As a surprise, we bought Mimi a horse ride on the beach.  It was her favorite part of the vacation.  I will post pictures in subsequent posts.

90: On being accepted

Linda March 23rd, 2009

Awhile back, inspiration hit me and I came up with what I thought was a very clever idea.  It involved Halloween skulls and paper clay.  I wrote it up and submitted it to Art Doll Quarterly magazine.  The editor at the time was Stacy Dumoski.  They had published a lot of my other work and she happily accepted it as a wonderful and fresh idea and was to publish it in the summer issue (the same issue that my gypsy doll is to appear).  Now stop me if you have heard this before but..there was a change of editors and the next editor turned it down. I was very disappointed to say the least–it had been a personal goal of mine to have a “major” article in that magazine–I had been so happy only to have it taken away, poor me.  That and the fact that I truly know that it is a new idea and that  magazines are always on the look out for fresh ideas–o.k. I think it is brillant (JMHO).

There is a scripture in the bible that says we are to cast our bread upon the water and in many days it will return to us.  So I continued to cast my bread and sent an edited copy of the article to a different magazine, Doll Crafter and Costuming.  I heard from the editor this a.m. and she loved it and is hoping that she will be able to fit it into her Oct. issue. AH, finally I said, someone recognizes brilliance LOL.  So I am doing the happy dance ;0)

It also looks like I maybe teaching soap making somewhere in town.  Wendy (one of the owners of the feed store) is very interested in doing this.  So we’ll talk some more and see where it gets us.  I have been making my families soap for the last 12 years.  Scott likes to say I am lyeing around–booo.  She did tell me though that Sultan School dist.has dropped their home ec. courses!!!  One more reason to be grateful that my kids are home schooled.

In my last post I had a request for pictures–never fear, I will upload some tomorrow.
