172: Keeping Busy or Trapped

Linda August 31st, 2010

I am coming to the end of my forced confinement…my cast is supposed to come off on the 9th of Sept–just 9 days away.  In the mean time I am still sitting around and making “stuff”.  My latest endeavours are : 2 pairs of socks…the light pink are mine and the darker ones an X-mas present.  They went fast, if I remember right it was 2 or 3 days (as compared with Scott’s socks which took me a couple of years LOL).

I have also finished the beaded doll part of the Gypsy Challenge.  I will make her a stand but I am having trouble either getting up to the studio or moving around in it so that will have to wait.  I have till the last week of Sept. so I still have some time yet.

I also have some things in the works for C & T publishing but I will tell more about that as time goes on.  And last but not least, I will have all  the beaded pins (53 +) listed on my ETSY site and ready to go.  Already sold one even before the magazine article has come out.  The “Bling” blurb will be in the Oct/Nov issue of Quilters Home and Scott will have a quilt in that same issue too.  Have also watched vast amounts of DVD’s—do you know that you can only check out 10 at a time on your library card?  It helps to have 3 kids and use their cards too!

99:almost there!!!!

Linda May 5th, 2009

The weather here has been wonderful the last few days and it is all I can do to work in my studio and not run outside and play.  I got the veggie beds cleaned and planted with the early veggies.  The peas are already up about 1 and 1/2 inches.  And ofcourse so are the radishes, lettuces and spinach.  I trimmed and tied up the raspberries and we are going to have one of Scott’s spring favorites–rhubarb bars, yummy good.  Noel and I have been busy with his running start application/testing/meeting stuff…it is almost over, whew!!!  I have just finished up writing an article (with pictures) for Doll Crafter and Costuming magazine (hopefully it will be in the Oct. issue). Was requested by Art Doll Quarterly Editor to send off 2 dolls (yet another post office run–the lady there is now used to my weird shipping requests and questions ;0).  Gypsy doll was in the latest issue of ADQ (page 72 if interested). In the picture above you can see 2 jean skirts that I made for my daughter and I.  Hers is the blue-ish one and mine is the pink and orange one.  Scott donated the fabrics–I am not sure which line they are from but were decorator weight and washed up beautifully.  My 100th post is coming-up and I have added new goodies to the pile so stay tuned.

94: Surprise

Linda April 7th, 2009

My daughter and I were at Fred Meyers a few weeks ago to buy a birthday for for a party she was going to.  We had some time kill so I decided to go over the magazine section and look at “Soft Dolls and Animals.”  Lo and behold on page 51 was an article on last years ‘Gypsy Challenge/Doll” show and what did my wondering eyes see, but my doll on the bottom left corner.  The picture is a bad picture of her, and I am sure you are tired me whining about how she looked at the “show”, but now that it is behind us, Scott and I are finding it pretty funny.  Looks like she is floating huh!  It was kinda shocking to she my doll in a magazine that I did not even know about.

74: Ben Franklin’s Mannikin Contest update

Linda November 24th, 2008

I was asked about the contest so here is the update.  Unbeknown-est to me, there were 2 categories—one was for customers and one was for employees.  Now sometimes they don’t consider me an employee–technically I am a contracted to them–I clean the store 3 nights a week, and sometimes, as is the case with this, I am an employee, go figure, sigh.  I did win first place for the employee category.  It was a nice $40 gift card, which I promptly spent on employee shopping night (stocking stuffers for Scott and more art supplies).

I am also working on the bat doll…I am now getting to the fun part.  She has a “body” of sorts.  I have finished painting her features and details and will begin on costuming her.  I am not sure how far I will get before Xmas as I have some projects that I want to do–doll clothes for Mimi’s doll, perhaps some felt slippers, a felted monkey from a kit for Max, and Xmas cookies to bake.  (And the gypsy doll to pack back up and send off–AGAIN!)

I will post pics of the bat doll in the next few days.

This is how my gypsy doll looked when I packed her–this is a picture of how she looked at the doll show…enough said.

68: Longo Drom or the Long Road

Linda October 28th, 2008

Here she is..well actually as of the moment, she is in Houston Texas.  I had taken these pictures about a month ago so they are done with the old camera–sigh.  She ended up about 24 inches tall (a lot taller that I had originally intended but sometimes these kinda projects grow LOL).  Dh quilted the skirt, it is to look like a tree trunk with roots and the doll is holding then up so she can constantly be on the move, never able to put down roots.  (Yeah, I know it is cornie ;0)  Longo Drom is Romney for the long road–gypsies are really a very sad people and not all the happy go-lucky types that is represented in the media.   She has quilted leaves in her hair and the head scarf  and slip are vintage material (very fragile so there fore hard to work with..will I never learn?)  I am sad to learn that a friend of Scott’s had promised to take pictures of the show and our doll and was not able to….I am wondering if I will find out how she does and how she was received by the public.  I think that I will not be doing this type of show again…I am too temperamental and need to have at least “some” feed back.  Sniff….

gyspy doll progress

Linda July 26th, 2008

Here are pictures of my gypsy doll so-far.  Yes, her legs look too long but remember that she will be fully clothed and I have figured out that the “body” doesn’t have to look perfect because it will be completely covered. One foot is bent-so that she look like she is taking a step–it goes along with theme of the doll (and she will have shoes).  You can also see a picture of her hand.  They look pretty good to me, but again, they will get partially covered up.

I feel that her face turned out good.  She kinda reminds me of Julie Andrews.  Since this picture I have gotten her pantaloons, slip, shoes and blouse finished. Those pictures will follow later.  I am planning on beading the cuffs of the blouse but am having construction difficulties.  The blouse is a kinda of raw silk and is a stinker to work with, I am toying with the idea of beading on interfacing “and then” putting it on the cuffs.  We’ll see if that work out.  The colors for the doll are greens and fall colors (reds, golds,  brown, yellows etc).  The next two steps are really Scott’s job now–he has some major parts he is to add to the costume.  I don’t want to say to much here because it is to go to the Houston Quilt Market/Treasure of the Gypsies show in Oct.  When finished she will be approx 24 inches tall. I am thinking I will ask my FIL to make a special stand for her–he LOVES to be able to use all his toys/tools so he digs this kind of request, LOL (And yes, that is a spot/mole on her upper lip.  I have one on mine–so I put it on ALL my dolls as kinda of a signature.)
